Supressor T - Cell Marker : CD 8

CD8 suppressor T cells (CD8+ regulatory T cells) are a subset of CD8+ lymphocytes that downregulate immune responses to maintain tolerance and limit inflammation. They act via direct cytotoxicity, cell–cell contact and release of inhibitory cytokines such as IL-10 and TGF-β to suppress other T cells and antigen-presenting cells. They influence autoimmunity, transplant tolerance and anti-tumor immunity.

High CD8 "suppressor" means an increased number or proportion of CD8+ T lymphocytes (cytotoxic/suppressor T cells). It often reflects recent or ongoing viral infection, chronic infection, immune activation, autoimmune disease, or less commonly a lymphoid malignancy. Clinical significance depends on absolute counts, the CD4:CD8 ratio, symptoms and other tests. Discuss results with your clinician for appropriate follow-up.

CD8 T cells are defined by CD8 (CD8αβ) together with CD3 and the T‑cell receptor (TCR)αβ. Subset markers: naive CD45RA, CCR7, CD62L; memory CD45RO with CCR7 (central) or CCR7− (effector). Activation markers include CD25, CD69, CD38, HLA‑DR. Cytotoxic markers: granzyme B and perforin. Co‑stimulatory/inhibitory markers include CD28 and PD‑1; IL‑7R (CD127) indicates survival potential.

High CD8 T-cell counts indicate immune activation—commonly from viral infections, recent vaccination, or intracellular pathogens. They may also rise with chronic infections (e.g., HIV or hepatitis), autoimmune disorders, certain cancers, or after immunotherapy. Elevated CD8 cells alone don’t diagnose a condition; clinical context, symptoms, and additional tests are needed to determine the underlying cause and guide management.

Suppressor T cells, also called regulatory T cells (Tregs), are a subset of T lymphocytes that limit immune responses to maintain self-tolerance and prevent autoimmunity. They suppress activation and proliferation of other immune cells through cell contact and inhibitory cytokines (e.g., IL‑10, TGF‑β). Tregs typically express CD4, CD25 and the transcription factor FOXP3 and help resolve inflammation and preserve tissue integrity.

CD8 (cluster of differentiation 8) is a cell-surface glycoprotein and coreceptor on cytotoxic T lymphocytes and some natural killer cells. It binds MHC class I molecules, aiding the T‑cell receptor in recognizing infected or abnormal cells. CD8+ T cells mediate killing of virus-infected or cancerous cells and serve as a key marker of cytotoxic immune function.
