Stress Thallium

A stress thallium is a nuclear myocardial perfusion scan using a small radioactive tracer (thallium‑201) given intravenously during exercise or medication‑induced stress. Gamma camera images show blood flow to heart muscle, identifying areas of reduced perfusion (ischemia) or scarring (infarct). It helps diagnose coronary artery disease, assess severity and guide treatment. The test is generally safe with low radiation exposure.

A thallium stress test is usually not painful. You may feel a brief sting when the tracer is injected, muscle ache or breathlessness from exercise, or temporary flushing, chest pressure or dizziness if a drug is used to simulate stress. The imaging itself is painless. Staff closely monitor you and serious complications are uncommon.

A stress thallium (nuclear) test costs vary widely: in the United States out‑of‑pocket prices commonly run about $1,000–$3,000; in the United Kingdom it’s free on the NHS but private scans often cost £400–£1,200; in India prices typically range roughly ₹3,000–₹15,000. Final cost depends on location, facility, additional fees and insurance coverage.

Thallium-201 is a radioactive tracer used in nuclear stress testing to map blood flow to the heart muscle. Thallium is a highly toxic metal used historically in rodenticides and insecticides (now largely restricted) and industrially in electronics, optics, infrared detectors, and specialty glass. In medicine, the radioactive isotope thallium-201 is used in nuclear cardiac imaging to assess myocardial perfusion. It’s also used in chemical research and some semiconductor applications, but occupational and consumer uses are tightly controlled due to toxicity.
