A positive exercise stress test suggests reduced blood flow to the heart (ischemia) and raises concern for coronary artery disease. Your doctor will usually order further tests—stress imaging, CT or coronary angiography—and assess risk factors to confirm diagnosis and guide treatment (medications, lifestyle changes, angioplasty or bypass). False positives can occur; timely cardiology follow-up is important, especially with chest pain or high-risk features.

A stress test evaluates heart response to exercise or medication-induced stress. You’ll wear electrode patches and a blood pressure cuff while walking on a treadmill or pedaling a bike (or receive a drug if you can’t exercise). Most people recover quickly from a cardiac stress test—within 15–30 minutes of stopping the exercise. Mild fatigue, muscle soreness or shortness of breath can persist for a few hours. If a pharmacologic agent was used, side effects may take several hours to resolve. You can usually resume normal activities the same day unless your clinician advises otherwise.
