A renal stone analysis test is a laboratory examination of a passed or removed kidney stone to identify its chemical composition—commonly calcium oxalate, calcium phosphate, uric acid, struvite, or cystine. Methods include infrared spectroscopy or X‑ray diffraction. Results guide prevention and treatment (diet, fluids, medications) and prompt metabolic evaluation to reduce recurrence risk.

Stone analysis methods include gross/visual inspection and wet chemical (spot) tests, plus definitive techniques: infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X‑ray diffraction (XRD). Microscopy (polarized light), scanning electron microscopy with elemental analysis (SEM‑EDS), and micro‑CT provide structural/detail imaging. Microbiological culture is done for infection-related stones. Quantitative composition reporting and elemental analysis help tailor prevention.

The four main types of kidney stones are: calcium oxalate, calcium phosphate, uric acid, and struvite. Calcium oxalate stones are most common; calcium phosphate often forms with metabolic imbalances; uric acid stones relate to high uric acid and acidic urine; struvite stones form with urinary tract infections and can become large. Treatment and prevention depend on the stone type.

A 24‑hour stone analysis is a urine collection test to assess kidney stone risk. All urine produced over 24 hours is collected and measured for volume, pH and levels of calcium, oxalate, uric acid, citrate, sodium and other stone‑forming or inhibiting substances. Results identify metabolic causes and guide tailored diet, fluid and medication strategies to prevent future stones.

Stone analysis usually takes from a few days up to two weeks. Basic microscopic or chemical analysis may provide results within 48–72 hours, while more precise methods (for example, infrared spectroscopy) or referral to specialised labs can extend turnaround to one to two weeks. Actual timing depends on the laboratory’s workload and the chosen test; your clinician will inform you when results are available.

A non-contrast CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis (CT KUB) is the gold-standard test to confirm kidney stones, showing size, number and location. Ultrasound is preferred in pregnancy or to avoid radiation; a plain abdominal X-ray (KUB) can detect radiopaque stones. Urinalysis (for blood/infection) and blood tests (creatinine) support evaluation but don’t definitively confirm stones.
