SPUTUM CBNAAT TEST

Sputum CBNAAT (Cartridge-Based Nucleic Acid Amplification Test) is a rapid molecular test that detects Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA and rifampicin resistance directly from sputum. It runs on an automated cartridge platform (e.g., GeneXpert), delivers results in about two hours, has high sensitivity and specificity, and helps prompt diagnosis and treatment initiation for pulmonary tuberculosis, including rifampicin-resistant cases.

CB-NAAT (Cartridge-Based Nucleic Acid Amplification Test) is a rapid molecular test primarily used to detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis and identify rifampicin resistance directly from sputum or other clinical specimens. It provides automated, sensitive results within a couple of hours, enabling faster diagnosis and prompt initiation of appropriate tuberculosis treatment, including detection of drug-resistant cases for correct regimen selection.

For CBNAAT, collect an early‑morning, deep‑cough sputum after rinsing the mouth; expectorate 1–3 mL of lower‑respiratory secretions (not saliva) into a sterile, wide‑mouth, leak‑proof container. Label, seal and send to the lab promptly (ideally within a few hours). Refrigerate (2–8°C) if transport will exceed 24 hours. For extrapulmonary testing submit the appropriate sterile fluid (CSF, pleural, BAL).

To check a CBNAAT (GeneXpert) test: provide a sputum/appropriate specimen at a certified lab. The cartridge-based machine runs in ~2 hours; collect the printed/online report or SMS notification. Results read as “MTB detected” or “not detected” and rifampicin resistance “detected,” “not detected,” or “indeterminate.” If detected or indeterminate, repeat testing and consult your doctor promptly for evaluation and treatment.

If a sputum test is positive, it confirms a respiratory infection or presence of a specific organism. Your clinician will confirm with chest imaging and culture/sensitivity tests, start targeted antibiotics or anti-tuberculosis therapy if needed, and advise isolation if contagious. Public-health notification and contact tracing (for TB), plus repeat sputum tests, monitor treatment response and guide therapy duration.

A sputum culture for Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the definitive confirmatory test. Rapid molecular tests (nucleic acid amplification tests, e.g., Xpert MTB/RIF) can quickly confirm MTB and detect rifampicin resistance. Smear microscopy for acid-fast bacilli is a common initial test but is less sensitive; culture or NAAT is required to confirm diagnosis and guide treatment.
