SPECIFIC IGE FOR MOSQUITO

You can be allergic to proteins in mosquito saliva, and sensitivity may vary between mosquito species because their saliva contains different proteins. Reactions range from small itchy bumps to large local swelling (Skeeter syndrome) and, rarely, systemic reactions. Management includes bite prevention, oral antihistamines, topical corticosteroids for severe swelling, and seeing a clinician if reactions are extensive or systemic.

IgE is an antibody class; total IgE measures the overall amount in blood and reflects general allergic tendency or conditions like atopy and some infections. Specific IgE detects antibodies directed against a particular allergen (e.g., dust mite, peanut), indicating sensitization to that trigger. Total IgE alone cannot identify the allergen; specific IgE is used with clinical history to confirm likely allergy.

There is no widely available, standardized allergy test for mosquito bites. Diagnosis is usually clinical, based on history and appearance. Specialized centers may offer skin‑prick, intradermal or specific IgE tests using mosquito‑saliva extracts for research or difficult cases, but these aren’t routine. Most care focuses on prevention and symptomatic treatment; consult an allergist if reactions are severe or atypical.

Identify mosquito allergy by unusually large, painful swelling at the bite site (Skeeter syndrome), intense itching, blistering, warmth, or spreading redness; repeated hives, generalized swelling, swollen lymph nodes, fever, or breathing difficulty suggest a systemic reaction. Seek immediate care for respiratory symptoms or anaphylaxis. If bites cause severe or recurrent reactions, consult a clinician for evaluation, possible testing, and management.

Allergic reactions to mosquito bites happen because your immune system reacts to proteins in the insect’s saliva. Different mosquito species have different salivary proteins, so you may be sensitized to some but not others. The strength of the reaction also depends on prior exposures, individual allergy tendency (atopy), bite number and location. Reactions range from small itchy bumps to larger local swelling; systemic allergy is rare.

Skeeter syndrome is an exaggerated allergic reaction to mosquito saliva that produces large, red, warm, itchy bumps resembling oversized mosquito bites. It can cause pain, fever, and swollen nearby lymph nodes. Treatment includes cold compresses, oral antihistamines, and topical steroids; severe cases may need prescription medication. See a doctor if swelling spreads, fever develops, or breathing is affected.
