Smear for Gonococci

Testing for gonococci (Neisseria gonorrhoeae) uses nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) on urine or swabs (endocervical, vaginal, urethral, rectal, pharyngeal) — the preferred, most sensitive method. Culture from swabs is used when antibiotic susceptibility is needed. In symptomatic men, Gram stain of urethral discharge can show intracellular gram‑negative diplococci. Samples should be taken from exposed sites for accurate diagnosis.
