Scanogram Lower Limb Standing, in Pimpri Chinchwad

A scanogram of the lower limb is a targeted X‑ray technique that obtains standardized images of the hip, knee and ankle on a single cassette to accurately measure leg lengths and assess alignment. Performed standing or supine with low radiation, it helps diagnose leg‑length discrepancy and guides orthopedic planning for corrective surgery, joint replacement or post‑trauma assessment. Quick, noninvasive test.

The patient lies supine on the X‑ray table with hips and knees fully extended and both legs parallel. Position the feet so the patellae face directly upward (toes dorsiflexed) and ensure equal pelvic rotation. Center and include hip, knee and ankle in three collimated exposures (or a single stitched image). Place a radiopaque calibration marker at limb level and immobilize to prevent movement.

Public healthcare usually covers a scanogram at no direct charge to patients. Private fees vary: in the UK about £100–£300, in the US roughly $100–$600, and in India around ₹300–₹2,000. Prices depend on facility, location, and whether radiologist reporting or extra imaging is included—contact local imaging centers for exact pricing.

Scanograms are specialized radiographic studies that accurately measure bone and limb lengths and alignment. They’re used to diagnose and quantify leg-length discrepancies, monitor growth in children, and plan orthopedic procedures such as osteotomy, limb-lengthening or joint replacement. The technique minimizes magnification error, provides precise measurements, and helps surgeons evaluate deformities and monitor post-operative outcomes to guide treatment decisions.

Recovery after a scanogram is quick and simple. It's an X‑ray procedure with no anesthesia, so you can usually resume normal activities right away. There’s no special aftercare unless contrast was used—then follow instructions about fluids and monitoring for reactions. You may feel minor stiffness from positioning. Contact your provider if you develop severe pain, swelling, shortness of breath, or allergic symptoms.

Scanograms use X‑rays to measure limb length, so risks are mainly radiation exposure—low per study but cumulative exposure slightly increases lifetime cancer risk. Other issues include repeat scans from positioning errors, limited accuracy if not properly aligned, and avoidance in pregnancy unless essential. Children need special dose reduction and shielding. Overall benefits usually outweigh small risks when clinically indicated.
