What is a Salivary Gland Scan Test in Visakhapatnam ?
What is Salivary Gland Scan?
A salivary gland scan measures how well your salivary glands take up and release a small, safe tracer. The test shows gland activity and drainage rather than giving detailed pictures of anatomy. It is non-invasive and shows internal structures directly, providing information that blood and urine tests cannot.
What does Salivary Gland Scan show?
Saliva is important for chewing, swallowing, speech, taste, and protecting teeth. This scan helps detect reduced function, blockages from stones, infection, inflammation, autoimmune conditions like Sjögren’s syndrome, and damage after radiation or surgery. Doctors use it to confirm causes of dry mouth or gland swelling. Results help guide medical treatments, removal of obstructions, or decisions about surgery and follow-up care.
What symptoms suggest Salivary Gland Scan may be needed?
A doctor may recommend Salivary Gland Scan when a patient reports localised pain, swelling, or injury, a lump or restricted movement, or an abnormal finding on an earlier test that needs to be examined directly. If you have these symptoms, GetVisit offers booking and home collection across Kancharapalem, Akkayyapalem, and other parts of Visakhapatnam.
How is Salivary Gland Scan done?
No needle or sample is involved. At an accredited imaging centre serving Kancharapalem and Akkayyapalem, Visakhapatnam, a radiographer performs the scan, which is painless and usually completed within 10 to 15 minutes. A qualified radiologist interprets the images and issues a report you can access on GetVisit. (Home collection does not apply to imaging.)
How accurate is Salivary Gland Scan?
Image quality and interpretation are the two pillars of accuracy. GetVisit's accredited centres serving Kancharapalem and Akkayyapalem, Visakhapatnam maintain modern equipment, and a qualified radiologist reviews each study before the report is issued.
Are there any risks to Salivary Gland Scan?
A standard X-ray uses a very low dose of radiation considered safe for diagnostic use; ultrasound uses sound waves and involves no radiation at all. If you are or might be pregnant, tell the centre in Kancharapalem or Akkayyapalem, Visakhapatnam beforehand so the safest approach can be chosen. There is no needle and no recovery time.
Did you know?
A salivary gland scan (salivary scintigraphy) is a nuclear medicine test that evaluates salivary gland function.

Fasting and dietary instructions:
Most imaging scans need no fasting. Some abdominal ultrasounds require a few hours of fasting or a full bladder, so follow the specific instruction shown when you book, or ask the centre.

What to bring:
Bring your doctor's referral, a valid photo ID, your insurance card if using cashless OPD, and any previous scans or reports so the radiologist can compare.
Timing:

Why Take a Salivary Gland Scan Test in Visakhapatnam ?
When does a doctor order Salivary Gland Scan?
Salivary Gland Scan is a nuclear medicine imaging procedure usually ordered from an imaging or nuclear medicine panel when patients report dry mouth, gland swelling, pain, or recurrent infections. It helps diagnose obstruction, infection, autoimmune damage like Sjögren’s, tumors, or radiation-related loss of function.
Who should get Salivary Gland Scan done in Visakhapatnam?
Visakhapatnam's coastal climate and cyclone-season infection risk, industrial and port workforce, rice-heavy diet driving diabetes and heart disease, and high summer humidity make regular preventive diagnostic testing a sound habit for residents across the city. Imaging benefits patients with pain, swelling, a palpable lump, injury, or an abnormal earlier finding, as well as those monitoring a known condition. GetVisit helps residents of Kancharapalem, Akkayyapalem, and across Visakhapatnam book accredited imaging with clear pricing.
What can Salivary Gland Scan help detect?
The conditions diagnosable through Salivary Gland Scan depend on the specific markers the test measures. Results either confirm a suspected diagnosis, support a clinical suspicion requiring further investigation, or effectively exclude the condition the test was screening for. Abnormal results can come from stones, infections, autoimmune disease, prior radiation, or medications that reduce saliva. Family history of autoimmune disease or head and neck cancer may raise the need for testing.
What do Salivary Gland Scan results mean?
Findings are graded from normal to significant, and comparison with any previous scan shows whether a known finding is stable, improving, or progressing. Your doctor explains the report in the context of your symptoms. See the FAQs below for more detail on this scan.
How often should Salivary Gland Scan be repeated?
For preventive screening with a normal baseline: annually for most adults above 35. For monitoring a known condition: at the interval your specialist recommends, typically every 3 to 6 months for active conditions and annually for stable, well-controlled ones.
What happens after your Salivary Gland Scan results are ready?
You will be notified the moment results are ready, usually the same day for routine tests. Open the report in the GetVisit app to see each value beside its reference range, share it with your doctor in a tap, or book a specialist consultation to talk it through.
