Rota Virus Antigen

A rotavirus antigen positive result means viral proteins from rotavirus were detected in a stool sample, indicating an active or recent rotavirus infection. This commonly causes watery diarrhea, vomiting, fever and dehydration in infants and young children. It is highly contagious; management focuses on rehydration and supportive care. Consult a healthcare provider for assessment, isolation advice, and consideration of vaccination status.

A negative rotavirus antigen result means no rotavirus proteins were detected in the stool sample, which usually indicates no active rotavirus infection. However, false negatives can occur if the sample was taken too early or late, improperly handled, or viral levels are low. If symptoms continue or are severe, repeat testing or further evaluation is recommended; consult your healthcare provider for guidance.

A rapid antigen test for rotavirus is an immunochromatographic lateral‑flow assay performed on fresh stool to detect rotavirus proteins. It delivers results within 10–30 minutes, enabling quick diagnosis of acute viral gastroenteritis and guiding infection‑control and treatment decisions. Sensitivity is lower than PCR, so false negatives can occur; it’s most useful early in illness and in clinical settings for rapid case identification.

Rotavirus is a double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) virus in the Reoviridae family. Its genome has 11 segmented dsRNA molecules packaged in a triple-layered, non-enveloped capsid. These segments encode structural and nonstructural proteins and permit genetic reassortment. Rotavirus commonly causes severe gastroenteritis in infants and young children worldwide.

Rotavirus commonly causes acute gastroenteritis in infants and young children and can be serious: it frequently leads to severe watery diarrhea, vomiting and fever, with dehydration that may require emergency care or hospitalization and, in low-resource settings, can be fatal. In older children and adults illness is usually milder. Vaccination and prompt rehydration markedly reduce severe outcomes.

A stool antigen test detects specific proteins (antigens) from microbes in a fecal sample to diagnose active infections—commonly Helicobacter pylori and parasites such as Giardia. It’s noninvasive, helps confirm infection, guides treatment decisions, and can assess eradication after therapy. Accuracy is high when testing protocols are followed; medications like antibiotics or proton pump inhibitors may affect results and should be discussed with your clinician.
