Rheumatoid Factor IgG Antibody

A positive rheumatoid factor (IgG) means your blood contains IgG-class autoantibodies that bind the Fc portion of other antibodies. This finding raises the likelihood of rheumatoid arthritis and often associates with more aggressive, erosive disease, but can also occur with other autoimmune disorders, infections, or in older healthy people. Diagnosis needs clinical correlation and further testing (anti‑CCP, imaging) and rheumatology follow-up.

A negative rheumatoid factor (RF) is generally reassuring because it lowers the likelihood of rheumatoid arthritis and some autoimmune conditions. However, it isn’t definitive: some people with RA are RF‑negative. Clinicians rely on symptoms, examination and additional tests (anti‑CCP antibodies, inflammatory markers, imaging) to make a diagnosis. If joint symptoms persist, further testing or rheumatology referral is recommended.

When rheumatoid factor (RF) is high, it suggests autoimmune activity and is commonly associated with rheumatoid arthritis and Sjögren’s syndrome; it can also be elevated in other autoimmune diseases, chronic infections, and with aging. High RF often accompanies joint pain, swelling, morning stiffness and increased risk of joint damage and systemic complications. It’s not diagnostic alone—clinical assessment and additional tests (e.g., anti‑CCP, imaging) are needed.

Rheumatoid factor (RF) is generally considered normal (negative) in children when below about 14–20 IU/mL; many laboratories use a cutoff near 14 IU/mL. Values above that may be reported as RF‑positive and require clinical correlation because cutoffs vary by lab and method. RF results in children are interpreted with symptoms and other tests; consult a pediatric rheumatologist for abnormal findings.

IgG positive means your immune system has produced antibodies from a past infection or vaccination, usually indicating prior exposure and some level of protection. It does not prove active infection; IgM or PCR tests help detect recent or ongoing infection. IgG appears weeks after exposure and can persist months to years. Rare false positives occur—discuss results with your healthcare provider for context and next steps.

Elevated rheumatoid factor is most often seen with hematologic cancers—especially non‑Hodgkin lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, Waldenström macroglobulinaemia and multiple myeloma. It can also be raised occasionally with some solid tumours (eg, lung or breast cancer). However, RF is non‑specific and commonly elevated in autoimmune diseases and chronic infections, so an isolated raised RF does not diagnose cancer.
