RENAL ULTRASOUND

A renal ultrasound evaluates kidney size, shape and position; detects cysts, solid masses, stones and scarring; and identifies urinary tract obstruction or hydronephrosis. It assesses blood flow with Doppler when needed and helps diagnose congenital abnormalities, infections or chronic kidney changes. Images can guide drainage or biopsy procedures. It's noninvasive and commonly used for initial kidney assessment.

Yes — many renal ultrasound exams ask that you arrive with a partially or fully filled bladder. Drinking about 500–1000 ml (roughly 2–4 cups) of water about one hour before the scan and avoiding urination helps visualize the kidneys and urinary tract. Specific instructions vary by facility and the exam’s scope, so follow the appointment instructions or call your imaging center if unsure.

A renal ultrasound can detect many structural signs of kidney disease—size changes, scarring, increased echogenicity, cysts, stones, masses and hydronephrosis from obstruction. However, it often misses early or purely functional (glomerular) kidney disease when kidneys look normal. Blood and urine tests, plus other imaging or biopsy, are needed to diagnose or stage many kidney conditions.

A renal scan (renal scintigraphy) typically takes about 30–60 minutes from injection to imaging. Certain types—diuretic renography, split‑function studies, or scans needing delayed images—may require extra waiting and extend the appointment to 1–3 hours. Arrive early for paperwork and preparation; check with the imaging department for exact timing for your specific study.

Early signs of kidney problems include changes in urination (more or less frequent, foamy, dark, bloody or cloudy), swelling of legs, ankles or around the eyes, persistent fatigue, weakness, poor appetite, nausea, metallic taste, itchy or dry skin, trouble concentrating, shortness of breath, and new or worsening high blood pressure. Seek medical evaluation if you notice these symptoms.

A renal (kidney) ultrasound cost varies by country and setting. In the U.S. privately it typically ranges from about $200–$1,000 (insurance or Medicare often covers much or all with a referral). In India, private clinic prices are roughly ₹500–₹3,000. In the U.K., Canada and many public systems it’s usually covered when ordered by a doctor; private scans incur extra fees.
