Renal Artery Doppler Scan

A renal artery Doppler test is a noninvasive ultrasound that evaluates blood flow in the kidneys and renal arteries. It detects narrowing or blockages (renal artery stenosis), reduced perfusion, thrombosis, or vascular abnormalities, helps investigate unexplained high blood pressure or kidney dysfunction, and monitors blood flow in transplanted kidneys. Results guide diagnosis and treatment planning for renovascular disease.

A renal artery Doppler ultrasound typically takes about 20 to 45 minutes to complete. Scan duration can vary with body habitus, the number of views required, patient cooperation, and whether additional abdominal imaging is needed. Allow extra time for registration and preparation; overall clinic time may be longer. Results are usually reviewed by a radiologist and communicated afterward.

A renal artery Doppler ultrasound is a noninvasive test and is generally not painful. A warm gel is applied and a probe is pressed over the abdomen or flank; you might feel mild pressure or brief discomfort if the area is tender, but it shouldn’t cause true pain. No radiation or needles are usually involved. If angiography is needed, that can be more uncomfortable.

Cost varies by country and setting. On public systems it’s usually free; private clinics typically charge about £100–£300 in the UK, $200–$1,000 in the US, and ₹500–₹3,000 in India. Exact fees depend on facility, whether additional Doppler views or contrast are needed, and insurance coverage—many insurers or national health services will cover medically indicated studies.

A positive Doppler ultrasound indicates abnormal blood flow—commonly a clot, blockage, or reduced perfusion. Clinicians will confirm with further imaging and tests, begin targeted treatment (for example anticoagulation for a DVT), arrange specialist referral, and monitor closely. Severe cases may need hospitalization, thrombolysis, or surgical intervention, plus follow‑up imaging and preventive measures to lower recurrence.

Renal Doppler ultrasound is non‑invasive and low risk. There’s no ionizing radiation; complications are rare. Possible mild discomfort from transducer pressure or a full bladder, minor skin irritation from gel, and very rare allergic reactions if contrast microbubbles are used. False positives or negatives can occur, possibly prompting further tests. No significant long‑term risks.
