An RBC liver scan uses a small amount of your own red blood cells labeled with a safe radioactive tracer. The scan shows how blood flows into and fills areas of the liver. This helps identify blood-filled lesions like hemangiomas and can locate active bleeding or splenic tissue. It is one of the most commonly ordered blood tests worldwide and plays a key role in both preventive screening and the investigation of liver disease.
What does RBC Liver Scan measure?
It is useful when ultrasound or CT scans are unclear. Doctors use the results to confirm a benign vascular lesion, guide treatment, or plan surgery. The procedure is generally well tolerated and gives specific information about the blood-pool behavior of liver lesions. Results are reported in International Units per litre (U/L).
