PSMA PET CT Scan

A PET‑CT PSMA scan combines PET imaging using a radiotracer that targets prostate‑specific membrane antigen (PSMA) with CT anatomy. It detects prostate cancer cells throughout the body, identifying primary tumours, recurrent disease and metastases with high sensitivity for small lesions. The tracer is injected, then scans are performed after uptake; results guide staging and treatment planning. Radiation exposure is relatively low.

A PSMA PET‑CT appointment usually takes about 1.5–3 hours. After radiotracer injection you wait for uptake (typically 45–90 minutes), then the PET‑CT scan itself lasts about 20–40 minutes. Times vary with tracer type, imaging area and centre protocols, so expect to be at the department for around two hours and follow any specific instructions from your clinic.

PSMA PET-CT can detect recurrence at low PSA levels; many centers use a PSA ≥0.2 ng/mL as a trigger for imaging after biochemical recurrence. Detection rates rise with PS

PSMA PET is not high-risk for prostate cancer evaluation. It’s a diagnostic PET scan using a small radioactive tracer that targets PSMA on prostate cancer cells. Most people tolerate it well; side effects are rare and mild. Radiation exposure is modest and similar to other PET/CT studies. It’s avoided in pregnancy and used cautiously in breastfeeding or severe kidney impairment after specialist advice.

PSMA PET/CT usually takes about 2–3 hours total. After tracer injection you wait 45–60 minutes for uptake, then the scan itself lasts roughly 20–40 minutes. Allow extra time for registration and prep; the imaging appointment typically runs 2–3 hours. Your doctor receives and reports the results afterwards, often within a few days.

PSMA-targeted radioligand therapy commonly causes fatigue, nausea, dry mouth (xerostomia) and taste changes. Bone marrow suppression can lead to anemia, low platelets and neutrophils, raising infection/bleeding risk. Kidney function may worsen, and some patients get pain flare or transient lab abnormalities. Severe but uncommon effects include significant hematologic toxicity and renal impairment; regular blood and kidney monitoring is recommended.
