What cancers cause elevated procalcitonin?

Procalcitonin is mainly a marker of bacterial infection but can be elevated in certain cancers. Markedly raised levels occur in medullary thyroid carcinoma and other neuroendocrine tumors (including small‑cell lung cancer). Moderate increases may be seen with advanced metastatic solid tumors (lung, breast, gastrointestinal), hematologic malignancies, and extensive tumor necrosis or tumor‑related systemic inflammation; concomitant infection greatly amplifies PCT.

How to reduce procalcitonin?

Procalcitonin falls when the underlying bacterial infection is treated and inflammation is controlled. Key steps: prompt targeted antibiotics guided by cultures and stewardship, adequate source control (drain abscesses, remove infected devices), intensive supportive care for sepsis, and regular PCT monitoring to guide antibiotic duration. Clinical improvement plus declining PCT supports stopping antibiotics; follow your clinician’s guidance.

What is a Procalcitonin Test in Lucknow ?

What is Procalcitonin?

The procalcitonin test measures the amount of procalcitonin in the blood. Procalcitonin is a protein that rises when the body has a serious bacterial infection. Accurate organism identification is clinically essential , typhoid, dengue, and malaria each require different treatment, and the wrong empirical approach delays recovery.

What does Procalcitonin measure?

Levels stay low in viral infections and in healthy people. This makes the test useful for spotting bacterial sepsis and other severe bacterial infections. Doctors use it to help decide if antibiotics are needed. They also use repeat tests to watch how well treatment is working.

What symptoms suggest Procalcitonin may be needed?

A doctor may recommend Procalcitonin when a patient reports sudden fever (above 38.5°C), body aches and chills, persistent headache, nausea or vomiting, abdominal pain, skin rash, joint pain, and extreme fatigue. In Lucknow, you can book this test online with home collection available in Kaiserbagh, Nishatganj, and beyond.

How is Procalcitonin performed?

Collection is a routine blood draw. Using a single-use sterile needle, the phlebotomist takes a small sample from a vein in your arm; GetVisit's team in Kaiserbagh and Nishatganj, Lucknow then barcodes and transports it under controlled conditions to the NABL lab.

How accurate is Procalcitonin?

Results are analytically reliable because GetVisit's Lucknow logistics network maintains proper cold-chain transport from your Kaiserbagh or Nishatganj collection point to the processing lab, preserving sample integrity. NABL independently audits quality control at regular intervals.

Are there any risks to Procalcitonin?

There is little to worry about. The needle prick lasts a moment and any bruising fades quickly. If you bruise easily or take blood thinners, tell the phlebotomist in Kaiserbagh or Nishatganj, Lucknow so they can apply pressure for longer.

Results are interpreted with symptoms, physical exam, and other lab tests to guide care and predict how severe the illness may become.

Why Take a Procalcitonin Test in Lucknow ?

When does a doctor order Procalcitonin?

Procalcitonin is often used in sepsis and infection workups with blood cultures and other markers. Doctors order it for fever, fast heart rate, low blood pressure, breathing problems, or suspected severe infection.

Who should get Procalcitonin done in Lucknow?

Lucknow faces a seasonal monsoon rise in dengue, typhoid, and waterborne infection, with older, densely populated areas such as Aminabad, Chowk, and Alambagh most affected. Water quality varies during the monsoon, making prompt testing important. Procalcitonin testing is important for symptomatic patients, for confirming recovery, and for household members of a confirmed case. Testing early in Lucknow's fever season prevents the complications that come from treating the wrong infection.

What conditions can Procalcitonin help diagnose?

It helps diagnose and track bacterial sepsis and guide antibiotic decisions. High levels commonly come from bacterial infections, major trauma, or recent surgery. A family history of immune disorders may make testing more relevant.

What do Procalcitonin results mean?

Higher or positive results: High procalcitonin typically indicates a systemic bacterial infection or sepsis: levels rise with severe bacterial inflammation and correlate with infection severity and prognosis. Lower or negative results: Procalcitonin falls when the underlying bacterial infection is treated and inflammation is controlled. Your doctor reads the value against the reference range on your report and your symptoms, and may repeat a borderline result to confirm it.

How often should Procalcitonin be repeated?

Infection tests are ordered when symptoms are present rather than on a fixed schedule. Repeat testing may be needed to confirm recovery, to check clearance after treatment, or if fever recurs. During Lucknow's monsoon fever season, prompt retesting is advised for any new febrile illness.

What happens after Procalcitonin results are ready?

After the lab authorises your results, the report is uploaded to your GetVisit account and saved for future comparison. If anything falls outside the expected range, your doctor can advise whether it needs a repeat test, a lifestyle change, or a specialist opinion.

What does high procalcitonin mean?

High procalcitonin typically indicates a systemic bacterial infection or sepsis: levels rise with severe bacterial inflammation and correlate with infection severity and prognosis. It helps distinguish bacterial from viral causes and can guide starting or stopping antibiotics. Some noninfectious conditions (major trauma, surgery, burns, certain cancers) and renal dysfunction may also elevate procalcitonin, so interpret with clinical context.

What is the role of procalcitonin in infection?

Procalcitonin is a blood biomarker that rises sharply in systemic bacterial infections and sepsis, often within a few hours, and correlates with infection severity. It helps distinguish bacterial from viral causes, guides initiation and early discontinuation of antibiotics, and monitors treatment response. Results must be interpreted alongside clinical assessment and other investigations because levels can be influenced by noninfectious factors and sampling time.

What level of procalcitonin is considered sepsis?

Procalcitonin (PCT) levels guide sepsis likelihood: <0.25 ng/mL makes bacterial sepsis unlikely; ≥0.5 ng/mL raises suspicion; ≥2 ng/mL strongly suggests sepsis or severe bacterial infection, with very high levels (e.g. >10 ng/mL) seen in severe sepsis/septic shock. Clinical context and serial measurements are essential, single values should be interpreted alongside signs, cultures, and other investigations.

What is the difference between procalcitonin and CRP?

Procalcitonin (PCT) and C‑reactive protein (CRP) are blood biomarkers of inflammation. PCT is more specific for bacterial infection, rises earlier (within about 6–12 hours), and better reflects bacterial severity and guides antibiotic decisions. CRP is a general acute‑phase reactant produced by the liver, less specific, rises more slowly (peaks around 24–48 hours), and increases with many inflammatory or tissue‑injury conditions.

Can menstruation affect Procalcitonin results?

Some tests, such as iron studies and certain hormone panels, can be influenced by your menstrual cycle. If you are on your period, mention it so your doctor can judge whether timing matters for Procalcitonin.

Can I take my diabetes medication before Procalcitonin?

If you take insulin or diabetes tablets and are fasting for Procalcitonin, ask your doctor whether to delay the dose until after the sample is collected, to avoid a low-sugar episode.
