PFT with Reversibility, in Navi Mumbai

PFT with reversibility is a pulmonary function test (spirometry) done before and after a short-acting inhaled bronchodilator to assess airflow obstruction and responsiveness. It measures FEV1 and FVC; significant reversibility is typically an increase in FEV1 of ≥12% and ≥200 mL. It's used to help distinguish asthma (usually reversible) from fixed obstruction like COPD, guide therapy, and monitor response.

Reversibility tests assess whether airflow obstruction improves after a bronchodilator. Spirometry is done before and about 10–15 minutes after a short-acting bronchodilator; key measures are FEV1 and FVC. A positive response is commonly defined as an increase in FEV1 of ≥12% and ≥200 mL, suggesting asthma-like reversible obstruction, while smaller changes suggest fixed obstruction such as COPD.

Reversibility in asthma is the significant improvement in airflow after bronchodilator or anti-inflammatory therapy, demonstrating variable and reversible airway obstruction. It’s assessed by spirometry — typically an increase in FEV1 of at least 12% and 200 mL from baseline after bronchodilator. Demonstrable reversibility helps distinguish asthma from fixed obstructive conditions and guides diagnosis and treatment decisions.

A positive reversibility test shows significant improvement in airflow after a bronchodilator during spirometry: an increase in FEV1 (and/or FVC) of at least 12% and at least 200 milliliters from baseline. This indicates reversible airway obstruction, more typical of asthma than fixed airflow limitation such as COPD, and helps guide diagnosis and treatment decisions.

Cost varies by country, facility and test type. Simple spirometry often costs about $30–$150; full pulmonary function panels (lung volumes, diffusion capacity) typically run $100–$400 or more. In low‑cost settings or public hospitals it may be free or much cheaper; private hospitals and specialist labs charge higher. Insurance or public health coverage often reduces out‑of‑pocket cost.

Yes. Pulmonary function tests (spirometry, lung volumes, DLCO) measure airflow, lung capacity and gas exchange and can detect functional abnormalities from lung damage—obstructive or restrictive patterns and impaired diffusion. They can indicate severity and progression, but cannot precisely show structural changes or location; imaging (X‑ray/CT) and clinical assessment are needed for confirmation and cause identification.
