Pecan, in Pimpri Chinchwad

In India pecans are usually sold and known by their English name—"pecan"—often transliterated into Hindi as पेकन or पेकन नट. They aren’t native to India, so local languages generally adopt the English term; sometimes they’re marketed informally as "American walnut" (अमेरिकी अखरोट), though that can be misleading because pecans are a distinct species.

No. A pecan is not a walnut. Pecan (Carya illinoinensis) is a hickory nut, while true walnuts belong to the genus Juglans (for example, English walnut, Juglans regia). They are related within the same tree‑nut family, share similar culinary uses, and can cause similar tree‑nut allergies, but they are distinct species with different shells, flavor, and texture.

Pecans are nutrient-dense nuts rich in monounsaturated fats, fiber, protein, vitamin E and minerals (magnesium, zinc). They contain antioxidants that reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, support heart health by improving cholesterol profiles, promote satiety for weight management, and may help blood-sugar control. Because they’re calorie-dense, enjoy pecans in moderation as part of a balanced diet.

Aim for a small handful of pecan nuts daily—about 28–30 g (roughly 15–20 pecan halves, ~1 oz). This supplies heart‑healthy fats, fiber and antioxidants but is calorie‑dense (around 190–200 kcal per ounce), so keep portions controlled. Choose unsalted, raw or dry‑roasted nuts, and consult a healthcare professional if you have nut allergies, weight concerns or specific medical issues.

Almonds are seeds of the almond tree (a drupe), while pecans are true tree nuts from the hickory family. They differ in shape, texture and flavor: almonds are firmer and mildly sweet; pecans are softer and buttery. Nutritionally both are healthy: pecans are higher in calories and monounsaturated fats; almonds provide more protein, fiber and vitamin E.

The United States is most known for pecans. Native to the U.S. and Mexico, pecan trees are widely grown across the southern U.S.—notably Georgia, Texas, and New Mexico—with the U.S. the largest producer and exporter. Pecan orchards and regional culinary uses (pies, pralines) have made the nut culturally and economically significant in American Southern states.
