What is a PAS Stain Test in Guwahati ?
What is PAS Stain?
The PAS (Periodic Acid-Schiff) stain is a lab staining method applied to tissue samples. It highlights certain sugars and carbohydrate-rich substances inside cells. Accurate organism identification is clinically essential, typhoid, dengue, and malaria each require different treatment, and the wrong empirical approach delays recovery.
What does PAS Stain measure?
These include glycogen, mucins (mucus-producing substances), and fungal cell walls. This makes it useful for spotting mucin-producing tumors, some storage disorders, and fungal infections in biopsies. Pathologists use the PAS stain alongside other stains and tests to clarify a diagnosis. It helps show where abnormal material is building up, and whether a lesion has mucin or fungal organisms.
What symptoms suggest PAS Stain may be needed?
PAS Stain is generally requested as part of a infection assessment. Doctors commonly investigate this area when someone reports sudden fever (above 38.5°C), body aches and chills, persistent headache, nausea or vomiting, abdominal pain, skin rash, joint pain, and extreme fatigue. Whether PAS Stain specifically is the right test depends on your history and what your doctor is looking for. In Guwahati, you can book this test online and check whether home collection reaches Beltola, Azara or your address.
How is PAS Stain performed?
A trained professional collects the required sample (swab, sputum, or fluid) at a GetVisit collection centre in Beltola or Azara, Guwahati using sterile technique. The sample is barcoded and transported to the NABL lab, and your digital report follows in the GetVisit app once results are authorised.
How accurate is PAS Stain?
Samples collected in Beltola or Azara, Guwahati are processed at NABL-accredited labs using validated methods and internal quality control. Accuracy depends on correct collection technique by a trained professional, which GetVisit's partnered centres follow. Reports are accepted by hospitals, specialists, and insurers across India.
Are there any risks to PAS Stain?
Risk is minimal. Swab, sputum, or fluid collection by a trained professional in Beltola or Azara, Guwahati may cause brief, mild discomfort but no lasting effects. Any specific precaution for your test will be explained at the collection centre.

Why Take a PAS Stain Test in Guwahati ?
When does a doctor order PAS Stain?
PAS Stain is used in the histology panel when pathologists examine biopsies or surgical tissue. Doctors may order it for unexplained lumps, chronic digestive symptoms, suspicious lesions, abnormal liver tests, or signs of infection.
Who should get PAS Stain done in Guwahati?
Guwahati's long monsoon with recurrent urban flooding, regional hepatitis burden, widespread vitamin D deficiency from prolonged cloud cover, rising diabetes, and role as the Northeast's medical hub make regular preventive testing worthwhile. Anyone with fever or flu-like illness in Guwahati, especially during and after the monsoon, benefits from prompt PAS Stain testing, as do travellers returning from endemic areas and people caring for someone already infected. Residents of Beltola, Azara, and flood-prone localities face higher seasonal exposure to mosquito- and water-borne infections.
What conditions can PAS Stain help diagnose?
It helps diagnose mucin-producing cancers, fungal infections, and some storage diseases where sugars build up. Abnormal findings result from disease processes, infections, or abnormal cellular storage, and family history of metabolic disorders can make this stain especially important.
What do PAS Stain results mean?
Higher or positive results: A positive PAS (Periodic acid-Schiff) stain indicates abundant carbohydrate-containing substances in tissue, glycogen, neutral mucins, glycoproteins, and basement membranes. Your doctor reads the value against the reference range on your report and your symptoms, and may repeat a borderline result to confirm it.
How often should PAS Stain be repeated?
Infection tests are ordered when symptoms are present rather than on a fixed schedule. Repeat testing may be needed to confirm recovery, to check clearance after treatment, or if fever recurs. During Guwahati's monsoon fever season, prompt retesting is advised for any new febrile illness.
What happens after your PAS Stain results are ready?
Book a follow-up consultation after reviewing your results. GetVisit stores your reports alongside your previous test history, so your doctor sees your full health trend, not just today's snapshot. This longitudinal context significantly improves the clinical value of each repeat test.
