Packed Cell Volume

Packed cell volume (PCV), or hematocrit, is the percentage of blood occupied by red blood cells. Measured by centrifuging a blood sample, it helps assess anemia, dehydration, or polycythemia. Typical adult ranges: about 40–54% for men and 36–48% for women; values below indicate anemia, above suggest dehydration or increased red cell mass, prompting further evaluation.

If PCV (hematocrit) is low, blood carries less oxygen, causing fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, palpitations, dizziness, pallor and reduced exercise tolerance. Severe reductions can cause rapid heart rate, low blood pressure and organ dysfunction from poor oxygen delivery. Low PCV indicates underlying problems—bleeding, nutritional deficiencies, hemolysis or chronic disease—that require medical evaluation and treatment.

High packed cell volume (PCV) means a raised proportion of red blood cells, increasing blood viscosity. This causes sluggish flow, reduced tissue perfusion and higher risk of clotting (strokes, heart attacks, DVT), plus symptoms like headache, dizziness, blurred vision, fatigue, bleeding or itching after warm baths, and splenomegaly. Causes include dehydration, chronic low oxygen, smoking, or primary polycythemia; medical evaluation is needed.

PCV (pneumococcal conjugate vaccine) primes the immune system to recognize Streptococcus pneumoniae’s capsule by generating anticapsular antibodies and immune memory, especially in infants and vulnerable adults. It prevents invasive pneumococcal disease (bacteremia, meningitis), pneumonia and otitis media, and reduces nasopharyngeal carriage and transmission, contributing to herd protection. Effective against multiple serotypes included in the formulation.

A PCV (packed cell volume) test measures the percentage of blood made up of red blood cells (hematocrit). It is used to detect and monitor anemia, polycythaemia, dehydration, fluid overload, and acute blood loss, and to assess treatment response or guide transfusion decisions. The test is performed on a blood sample, usually by centrifugation, to evaluate oxygen-carrying capacity and blood volume status.

One unit of packed red blood cells (PRBC) is roughly 250–350 mL (about 200–250 mL red cells plus additive solution). In an average adult, one unit typically raises hemoglobin by ≈1 g/dL (≈10 g/L) and hematocrit by about 3 percentage points. Exact volume and effect vary with collection method, donor characteristics, and patient blood volume or ongoing bleeding.
