NT-NB Scan (Twins)

Yes. An NT (nuchal translucency) ultrasound at about 11–14 weeks commonly identifies twin pregnancies, determines chorionicity/amnionicity, and measures a separate NT for each fetus. Twin screening is more complex—measurements and aneuploidy risk assessment are done per fetus, and accuracy can be lower, especially in monochorionic twins, so additional monitoring or testing is often recommended.

An NT scan for twins typically takes about 20–45 minutes. It often runs longer than a singleton scan because both fetuses need separate nuchal translucency and nasal bone measurements. Time varies with fetal position, maternal body habitus and clarity of images; sometimes a follow-up scan is needed if measurements aren’t clear.

A normal NT-NB scan shows a nuchal translucency measurement within the expected range for gestational age (typically under about 3.5 mm at 11 to 14 weeks or with crown–rump length 45–84 mm) and a clearly visible nasal bone. These findings lower the likelihood of chromosomal abnormalities but are not definitive; further screening or diagnostic testing may be offered.

Twins are usually detected by ultrasound. A transvaginal ultrasound can identify multiple embryos and heartbeats as early as 6–8 weeks; a standard abdominal or dating scan commonly confirms twins around 8–12 weeks. Chorionicity and detailed anatomy are assessed at the mid‑pregnancy anatomy scan, typically 18–20 weeks. Follow‑up ultrasounds monitor growth and complications throughout pregnancy.

Twins can often be seen on ultrasound as early as 5–6 weeks’ gestation with a transvaginal scan (two gestational sacs or embryos). Cardiac activity is typically visible by 6–7 weeks. Routine transabdominal scans at 10–13 weeks confirm number and placentation (chorionicity); detailed anatomy scans occur around 18–20 weeks. Elevated hCG or a large uterus may prompt earlier scanning.

On an early ultrasound around 6–8 weeks, twins can appear as two separate gestational sacs, each with a yolk sac and embryo (dichorionic), or as one sac containing two yolk sacs/embryos (monochorionic). You may see two fetal poles and two heartbeats if developed. Sac and embryo measurements help date the pregnancy and determine whether they share a placenta; follow-up scans clarify chorionicity.
