Neck MRI

An MRI of the neck visualizes soft tissues, cervical vertebrae, intervertebral discs, spinal cord and nerve roots, ligaments, and nearby blood vessels. It detects disc herniations, spinal stenosis, nerve compression, tumors, infections, inflammation, bone marrow changes, congenital abnormalities and post‑operative changes. With contrast, it better characterizes tumors, abscesses and vascular lesions, guiding diagnosis and treatment planning.

A neck MRI itself requires no formal recovery—most people leave immediately after the scan. Scanning usually takes 20–45 minutes; with contrast expect an extra 10–20 minutes for injection and brief monitoring. If you received sedation, plan to be observed until alert (often a few hours) and avoid driving for 24 hours. Minor dizziness or injection-site soreness can occur.

MRI is not routinely necessary for most neck pain. Initial care is conservative — rest, pain relief and physiotherapy. MRI is indicated for red flags (trauma, infection, cancer), progressive or severe neurological deficits, when symptoms persist or worsen after about four to six weeks, or when surgery is being considered. MRI best evaluates discs, nerve roots and the spinal cord.

Wear comfortable, metal‑free clothing for a neck MRI — a plain T‑shirt or hospital gown is ideal. Remove all jewelry, hairpins, watches, hearing aids, dentures, piercings, bras with underwire, and clothing with metal snaps, zippers, or metallic threads. Avoid makeup with metallic shimmer and leave credit cards or electronics outside the scanner. You’ll usually be asked to change into a provided gown if needed.

Yes, a neck (cervical) MRI can detect structural causes of nerve injury such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, bone spurs, inflammation, and compression of nerve roots or the spinal cord. However, MRI shows anatomy and indirect signs of nerve injury; it cannot measure nerve conduction or microscopic axonal damage. Electrodiagnostic tests (EMG/NCV) and clinical evaluation are often needed to confirm functional nerve damage.

Yes — a neck MRI can visualize the thyroid gland, show size, nodules, masses, and extension into surrounding tissues, and help stage large or invasive disease. However MRI is not the first-line test for detecting or characterizing most thyroid nodules; ultrasound is preferred for detailed nodule assessment and guided biopsy, while nuclear scans assess function.
