NCS (Nerve Conduction Study) Facial Nerve, in Vasai Virar

A nerve conduction study (NCS) for facial nerves measures how well motor signals travel along the facial nerve by applying small electrical stimuli and recording muscle responses. It assesses conduction speed, latency and amplitude to detect nerve injury, demyelination or axonal loss. Often performed with electromyography, it helps diagnose causes of facial weakness (e.g., Bell’s palsy), estimate prognosis and guide treatment.

The cost of a facial nerve NCS varies by country and setting: in India it’s commonly ₹500–₹3,000 at diagnostic centers; in the UK the NHS covers it for eligible patients (private testing costs roughly £200–£500); in the US private charges typically range from about $200 to $1,000+ depending on facility and whether EMG is included. Final price depends on location, facility, and insurance coverage.

Yes. Electromyography (EMG) and facial nerve conduction studies can assess facial nerve function by recording compound muscle action potentials and needle EMG of facial muscles (e.g., orbicularis oculi/oris, frontalis). They help localize lesions, gauge severity and prognosis (best after 1–3 weeks to detect denervation). Risks are minor (discomfort, bleeding, infection).

Normal facial nerve conduction values: distal motor latency ≈2–4 ms (stimulus at stylomastoid foramen to orbicularis oculi/nasalis), CMAP amplitude typically ≥1 mV (commonly 1–8 mV), and conduction velocity >60 m/s. Side-to-side latency difference should be <1 ms and amplitude difference usually <20–30%. Marked latency prolongation or amplitude drop (>50%) indicates pathology.

Check facial nerve function by comparing both sides: ask the person to raise eyebrows, close eyes tightly, smile showing teeth, puff out cheeks and whistle. Note asymmetry, drooping, altered taste, hyperacusis, numbness or pain. Sudden onset, inability to close an eye, or accompanying limb weakness/slurred speech needs emergency care. For persistent or progressive signs, see a neurologist/ENT for imaging and nerve testing.

Nerve conduction studies typically take about 20–45 minutes. Simple studies assessing a few nerves often finish in 20–30 minutes; more extensive testing of multiple nerves or limbs can take 45–60 minutes. If combined with electromyography (EMG) the overall appointment may last 60–90 minutes. Duration depends on the number of nerves tested, patient cooperation, and any additional diagnostic steps.
