Mycobacterium Complex - PCR

Mycobacterial PCR is a molecular test that detects DNA from Mycobacterium species (including M. tuberculosis and non-tuberculous mycobacteria) in clinical samples such as sputum, bronchoalveolar lavage, or tissue. It provides rapid, sensitive identification—often within hours—supporting early diagnosis and treatment decisions. Positive results are usually confirmed by culture and drug‑susceptibility testing for complete clinical management.

MTB PCR positive means Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex genetic material was detected in a clinical specimen by polymerase chain reaction. This indicates tuberculosis bacteria are present and supports a diagnosis of TB. PCR gives rapid, specific results but can’t always distinguish live from dead organisms or assess drug resistance; culture and sensitivity testing are usually needed to confirm infection and guide treatment.

The PCR test for Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a molecular assay that detects the bacterium's DNA in sputum or other clinical samples. TB PCR (nucleic acid amplification) is usually reported qualitatively as "detected" (positive) or "not detected" (negative); there is no universal numeric "normal range." Some assays provide cycle‑threshold (Ct) values or semi‑quantitative categories; a positive result generally corresponds to a Ct below the lab cutoff (commonly around 35–40). Clinical correlation and confirmatory testing are recommended.

If your TB test is positive, don’t panic but see a healthcare provider promptly. Further evaluation (symptom check, chest X‑ray and sputum/NAAT) will determine latent versus active TB. Latent TB isn’t contagious and can be treated to prevent disease; active TB requires prompt multi‑drug therapy and isolation until noninfectious.
