Mugwort, in Navi Mumbai

Mugwort is the plant Artemisia vulgaris. In India it is most often referred to by its botanical name or simply as “mugwort” in English; there isn’t a single universal Hindi or regional name. Vernacular names vary by state and language, so people and sources commonly use the scientific name Artemisia (or Artemisia vulgaris) for clear identification.

Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) is traditionally used for digestive complaints (indigestion, bloating), to stimulate menstruation and relieve menstrual cramps, as a mild sedative for sleep and anxiety, and topically or in moxibustion for pain and circulation. It’s also used in some herbal remedies for parasitic infections. Cautions: avoid in pregnancy, with ragweed allergy, or when taking certain medications.

Mugwort can be mildly poisonous. Small culinary amounts are usually tolerated, but leaves and essential oils contain compounds (e.g., thujone) that can cause stomach upset, vomiting, seizures in large doses, and potential liver toxicity. It commonly triggers allergic contact dermatitis and respiratory reactions in ragweed-sensitive people. Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding; do not take high‑dose extracts. Seek medical help for severe symptoms.

Mugwort (Artemisia) extract is used in skincare for its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, helping calm redness, irritation and sensitive or acne-prone skin. Rich in antioxidants and bioactive compounds, it may support skin barrier repair, reduce itch and provide mild antimicrobial benefits. Common in calming serums, masks and toners, mugwort is valued for gentle hydration and anti-inflammatory relief.

No. Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) is a herb in the daisy family used in traditional remedies and moxibustion; it can trigger allergies and isn’t recommended in pregnancy. Tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) is an Australian tree whose essential oil has topical antimicrobial uses but can irritate skin and is toxic if swallowed. They differ in plant family, chemistry, uses, and safety.

Mugwort is traditionally used to promote vivid or lucid dreams, and many people report increased dream intensity after using it as a tea, smudge, or pillow herb. Scientific evidence is limited and mainly anecdotal, though mugwort contains volatile compounds that may influence sleep and dreaming. Use cautiously— it can cause allergic reactions and should be avoided during pregnancy and with some medications.
