MRV BRAIN

A magnetic resonance venography (MRV) of the brain is a noninvasive MRI technique that visualizes cerebral veins and dural venous sinuses. It maps venous anatomy and blood flow, often using time-of-flight or contrast-enhanced sequences, to detect venous sinus thrombosis, occlusion, stenosis, or malformations and to assist surgical planning. MRV avoids ionizing radiation but can have artifacts and sometimes requires contrast for best detail.

An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) produces detailed cross-sectional images of tissues and organs to assess anatomy and pathology (brain, spine, joints, soft tissues). An MRV (magnetic resonance venography) is a specialized MRI technique optimized to visualize veins and venous blood flow—often using specific sequences or contrast—to detect venous thrombosis, stenosis, or anomalies. MRV focuses on vascular evaluation; MRI has broader diagnostic use.

An MRV of the brain typically takes about twenty to forty-five minutes. Non-contrast MRVs are often shorter (around fifteen to thirty minutes), while contrast-enhanced studies or additional sequences can lengthen the scan to thirty to sixty minutes. Preparation, positioning and post-scan checks add extra time, so expect a slightly longer appointment at the imaging center.

Magnetic resonance venography (MRV) is generally not painful. The scan is noninvasive and involves lying still inside an MRI machine; you may feel mild discomfort from staying still or from claustrophobia. If contrast dye is used, the IV insertion can sting and you may notice a brief warm sensation when injected. Serious pain or complications are uncommon.

In the United States expect roughly $400–$3,000 self‑pay; in private UK clinics about £300–£800 (NHS referrals are usually free); in India roughly ₹3,000–₹10,000. Final price depends on location, use of contrast, facility type, and whether insurance or a public health system covers the test.

MRV scans are interpreted by a radiologist; urgent or inpatient findings are often available the same day or within a few hours. Routine outpatient reports are usually issued within 24–48 hours, although some facilities may take 3–7 days for the formal report. Your referring clinician will communicate results and arrange follow-up promptly if any urgent abnormality is detected.
