Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is an MRI technique that measures directional water diffusion in brain tissue, producing tensor maps and quantitative metrics (e.g., fractional anisotropy, mean diffusivity). Tractography is a post-processing method that uses DTI (or other diffusion) data to computationally reconstruct and visualize probable white-matter fiber pathways. DTI gives raw diffusion measures; tractography infers tracts but can be limited by crossing fibers and modeling assumptions.

A tractogram is a 3D map of brain white‑matter pathways generated by diffusion MRI tractography. Algorithms (deterministic or probabilistic) trace streamlines from seed points using diffusion tensor or high‑angular data to infer fiber orientation. Tractograms visualize and quantify connectivity for research and surgical planning but are indirect, model‑dependent and can produce false positives/negatives, requiring cautious interpretation alongside other clinical data.

Tractometry is a quantitative imaging method that measures microstructural properties along white‑matter fiber tracts using diffusion MRI and tractography. It extracts metrics such as fractional anisotropy, mean, radial and axial diffusivity along tract trajectories to profile integrity, detect abnormalities, and monitor changes over time. It’s used in research and clinical contexts for studying development, injury, neurodegenerative and psychiatric conditions.

Tractography is an MRI-based technique that uses diffusion-weighted imaging (often diffusion tensor imaging) to reconstruct and visualize three-dimensional white matter pathways in the brain and spinal cord. It noninvasively maps fiber directionality and connectivity, producing color-coded tract maps and quantitative metrics (e.g., fractional anisotropy). Neither is universally better—choice depends on the clinical question. CT uses X‑rays, is fast and excellent for bones, lungs, trauma and acute bleeds. MRI uses magnetic fields, avoids ionizing radiation, and gives superior soft‑tissue and brain/spinal imaging and tumor characterization but is longer, pricier, and unsuitable with some metal implants.
