MRI Scapula

A scapula MRI visualizes the shoulder blade’s bones, bone marrow, joints and the surrounding soft tissues—muscles, tendons, ligaments and bursae. It detects fractures, bone contusions, marrow abnormalities, tumors or infections, rotator cuff and labral tears, tendinopathy, bursitis, muscle strains, and postoperative changes. The study helps assess cartilage and joint alignment and guides diagnosis and treatment planning.

Start with plain radiographs (AP, lateral, scapular‑Y) to detect scapular fractures or dislocation. CT gives superior bony detail for complex fractures. MRI is best for soft‑tissue injury, occult fracture, and bone‑marrow edema or labral/rotator‑cuff pathology. Ultrasound helps dynamic soft‑tissue assessment; bone scan may aid diagnosis of occult stress fractures or infection.

Standard shoulder MRI is painless; the machine’s loud noises and needing to lie still can be uncomfortable, especially if you’re claustrophobic. A shoulder MR arthrogram involves injecting dye into the joint, which can cause brief sharp pain and a few days’ soreness or bruising. Intravenous contrast may sting briefly. Serious complications are rare; inform staff about allergies, pregnancy, or metal implants.

Costs vary widely. In the US, a shoulder MRI typically runs about $400–$3,000+ (higher in hospitals or with contrast). In the UK, private scans commonly cost £200–£700 while NHS scans are free to eligible patients. In India, private MRI centers charge roughly ₹2,000–₹8,000. Prices depend on location, facility, and whether contrast or radiologist fees are included.

A dedicated scapula MRI typically takes about 20–45 minutes of scanning time. If contrast (gadolinium) or extra sequences are required, the imaging portion can extend to 30–60 minutes. Allow additional time for check-in, positioning, and post-scan instructions—overall appointment time is commonly 45–90 minutes. Exact duration depends on the facility, scanner type, and reason for the study.

Shoulder MRI can show structural causes of nerve compression (bony spurs, rotator cuff tears) and indirect signs of nerve injury such as muscle edema or atrophy. Specialized MR neurography can visualize nerves and plexus lesions, but routine shoulder MRI doesn’t assess nerve function. Electrophysiological testing (EMG/nerve conduction) plus clinical exam are usually needed to confirm and localize true nerve damage.
