MRI Scan Urography

MRI urography is a non‑invasive MRI technique that produces detailed images of the kidneys, ureters and bladder. It evaluates anatomy and urine flow to detect obstruction, stones, tumors, congenital anomalies or post‑operative changes. Techniques include fluid‑sensitive and contrast‑enhanced (gadolinium) excretory imaging. Advantages are excellent soft‑tissue detail and no ionizing radiation; contrast and certain implants may be contraindications.

Yes. MRI can detect many kidney problems—structural abnormalities, tumors, cysts, infections, blockages and vascular conditions—using conventional MRI, MR urography and MR angiography. It’s especially useful when avoiding radiation. Limitations include poorer detection of small kidney stones and higher cost. Gadolinium contrast is used cautiously in severe kidney impairment; ultrasound or CT may be preferred in some cases.

Urography is performed to visualize the kidneys, ureters and bladder to diagnose and evaluate conditions such as stones, tumors, strictures, congenital anomalies, obstruction and causes of hematuria or recurrent infection. It assesses urinary tract anatomy and excretory function, helps localize injury or blockage, guides surgical or interventional planning, and monitors treatment response or postoperative changes.

Before an MR urogram: follow your imaging center’s instructions about fasting and bladder filling (some exams need a full or emptied bladder). Drink water unless told not to. Tell staff about pregnancy, allergies, kidney problems, and all medications (including metformin); you may need a recent creatinine/eGFR blood test before gadolinium contrast. Remove metal jewelry, bring prior scans, and report claustrophobia—sedation can be arranged.

Urography is usually not painful. Most people feel little more than pressure from IV insertion and a brief warm flush or metallic taste when contrast is injected; mild nausea, bladder urgency, or local soreness can occur. Rarely, allergic reactions, contrast leakage, or catheter-based procedures cause more pain. Tell staff about allergies, kidney problems, or medications beforehand.

Uroflowmetry measures the rate and pattern of urine flow during normal voiding. It’s a quick, noninvasive test where you urinate into a special device that records volume, peak flow, average flow and flow duration. Results help detect obstruction, weak bladder contraction, or urinary retention and guide further testing. Preparation usually requires arriving with a comfortably full bladder.
