MRI Scan Upper Abdomen with MRCP

An MRI of the upper abdomen with MRCP is a noninvasive imaging test that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed pictures of the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas and surrounding tissues, and involves no ionizing radiation. MRCP (magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography) specifically visualizes bile and pancreatic ducts for stones, strictures, inflammation or tumors. It may use intravenous contrast and usually requires fasting and removal of metal.

MRCP fees vary by part and testing centre. Expect roughly: Part 1 £300–£450; Part 2 written £350–£500; clinical (PACES) £800–£1,200. Completing all parts usually costs £1,500–£2,500 in total when you include exam fees, re-sits, college registration, study courses, and travel. An MRCP (MRI of the bile and pancreatic ducts) is generally painless and non‑invasive. You lie still inside a scanner; loud noises and the confined space can be uncomfortable if you’re claustrophobic. Some people feel brief stinging from an IV or warmth if contrast is used, and lying flat may cause minor discomfort, but the scan itself does not cause pain.

MRI abdomen is a comprehensive scan of abdominal organs (liver, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, bowel) to assess masses, inflammation, and vascular disease, using multiple sequences and sometimes contrast. MRCP (magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography) is a focused, heavily T2-weighted technique that noninvasively visualizes bile and pancreatic ducts for stones, strictures, or obstruction, usually without contrast. It can be done alone or added to an MRI abdomen.

MRCP (Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography) images the bile and pancreatic ducts and can demonstrate masses that obstruct or distort these ducts — for example biliary or pancreatic tumors — but it’s less sensitive for small or early lesions. If a tumor is suspected, contrast-enhanced MRI, CT, endoscopic ultrasound, or biopsy are often used for better detection and characterization.

Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is a noninvasive MRI scan with minimal recovery — most people can eat, drink and resume normal activities immediately afterward. If intravenous sedation was given you may be monitored 30–60 minutes and should not drive or operate machinery for 24 hours. Minor bruising at an IV site is possible; contact your provider for significant pain, fever, or allergic reactions.
