MRI Scan Tongue

Yes. MRI can detect tongue cancer and is excellent for defining tumor size, depth of invasion, and spread into nearby soft tissues and base of tongue. Contrast-enhanced MRI aids local staging and surgical planning, including assessment of adjacent muscles and perineural spread. It complements clinical exam, ultrasound, CT and PET-CT; definitive diagnosis still requires tissue biopsy.

Doctors check for tongue cancer with a thorough oral exam and medical history, inspecting and palpating the tongue and nearby lymph nodes. If lesions look suspicious, they perform a biopsy (incisional or excisional) for definitive diagnosis. Imaging — CT, MRI or PET — and endoscopic exams assess tumor size and spread. Stage 1 tongue cancer is early disease where the primary tumour is 2 cm or smaller and confined to the tongue, with no spread to nearby lymph nodes or distant sites (T1 N0 M0). It may cause a small persistent sore, lump, or pain on the tongue. Treatment typically involves surgery or targeted radiotherapy with high curative intent and close follow-up.

A cancerous tongue often shows a persistent sore, lump, or ulcer that won’t heal (usually >2 weeks). Lesions may appear as red, white, or mixed patches, often firm, indurated, or crusted, sometimes bleeding or painful. You may also notice numbness, difficulty swallowing or speaking, and an immobile or fixed area with ill-defined borders. Prompt medical review is essential.

Many benign conditions can resemble tongue cancer: traumatic or aphthous ulcers, oral lichen planus, leukoplakia and erythroplakia, oral thrush (candidiasis), geographic tongue or glossitis, benign growths (fibromas, pyogenic granulomas), and infections such as herpes or syphilis. Nutritional deficiencies and HPV-related lesions may also mimic cancer, so persistent or changing lesions require prompt medical evaluation.
