MRI Scan Spine Sacral

An MRI of the sacral spine is a noninvasive scan that produces detailed images of the sacrum, sacroiliac joints, adjacent discs, nerve roots and soft tissues. It helps diagnose causes of lower back, buttock or leg pain such as fractures, tumors, infection, inflammatory disease, nerve compression or congenital anomalies. MRI uses magnetic fields (no ionizing radiation) and may use contrast to better show abnormal tissue.

Costs vary widely by country and setting. In publicly funded systems an MRI lumbo‑sacral spine is usually covered when clinically indicated. Privately, expect about £150–£700 (UK), $400–$3,500+ (US), or INR 2,500–10,000 (India) for a non‑contrast scan; contrast studies and higher‑field machines raise the price. Always check local providers and insurance coverage.

The sacral area on an MRI refers to the sacrum—the triangular bone at the base of the spine formed by fused S1–S5 vertebrae—plus adjacent sacroiliac joints, nerve roots, ligaments, and soft tissues. MRI evaluates bone marrow, fractures, infections, tumors, sacroiliitis, congenital anomalies, and nerve compression affecting the pelvis and lower limbs, showing detailed bone and soft-tissue changes.

An MRI of the sacrum is a magnetic resonance scan that produces detailed images of the sacral bone (the triangular bone at the base of the spine) and surrounding joints, nerves, marrow and soft tissues. It helps diagnose causes of lower back, buttock or pelvic pain, fractures, infection, tumours, inflammatory conditions and post‑operative changes. It uses magnetic fields and radio waves, not ionising radiation.

An MRI can reveal structural causes of sacral nerve problems — disc herniation, tumors, cysts, fractures, inflammation or nerve-root compression — and sometimes abnormal nerve signal on advanced MR neurography. However, MRI doesn’t reliably show microscopic or purely functional nerve damage. Electrophysiological tests (EMG/nerve conduction studies) and clinical assessment are often needed to confirm and quantify sacral nerve injury.

MRI is not usually necessary for uncomplicated sciatica. Diagnosis is mainly clinical, and most cases improve with conservative care. MRI is advised when red flags are present (suspected cauda equina, severe or progressive weakness, infection or cancer), symptoms persist or are disabling after about six weeks, or when surgical intervention is being considered.
