An MRI of the lumbar spine visualizes bones, intervertebral discs, spinal canal, nerve roots, ligaments and bone marrow. It detects disc degeneration, bulges or herniations, spinal canal or foraminal stenosis, nerve‑root compression, facet arthropathy, vertebral fractures, infections, tumours and postoperative or inflammatory changes. MRI also assesses soft‑tissue and marrow abnormalities and helps guide treatment when neurological signs or persistent back pain occur.

Cost varies by country, facility and insurance. MRI scans themselves rarely cause rashes. Skin reactions are usually due to gadolinium contrast (allergic or non‑allergic rashes), contact dermatitis from adhesives or skin antiseptics, or local heating/skin burns from coils. In people with severe kidney disease, gadolinium has been linked to a rare systemic condition. Always tell staff about allergies and kidney problems, and seek care for widespread rash, swelling, or breathing difficulty.

Lumbar spine screening is a focused clinical assessment to detect causes of low back pain, neurological deficits, structural problems, and red flags (fracture, infection, malignancy, cauda equina). It includes history, inspection, palpation, range-of-motion, neurological tests (reflexes, motor, sensation, straight-leg raise) and, if indicated, imaging or labs. Purpose: identify urgent conditions, guide management, or prompt specialist referral.

A lumbar MRI can reveal structural causes of nerve injury — disc herniation, foraminal stenosis, inflammation, nerve-root compression, tumors or abscesses — and may show swelling or abnormal signal in affected roots. MRI visualizes anatomy but not nerve function: it cannot directly measure conduction or microscopic axonal loss. Electrophysiological testing (EMG/NCS) or MR neurography can help evaluate functional or subtle nerve damage.

An MRI of the lumbar spine usually takes about 20–40 minutes for the imaging itself. Shorter protocols can be ~15 minutes; more comprehensive exams or those using IV contrast may take 45–60+ minutes. Including registration, positioning and contrast administration, expect a total appointment time of roughly 30–90 minutes. Factors affecting length include sequences ordered, need for contrast, patient movement and scanner type.
