Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is the spectroscopy used with MRI to noninvasively measure tissue metabolites and chemical composition. Clinical practice primarily uses proton (1H) MRS, while specialized studies may use phosphorus (31P), carbon (13C), or sodium (23Na) spectroscopy. MRS complements anatomical MRI by detecting biochemical changes in brain, liver, muscle, and tumors.
