MRI Scan Shoulder Joint Both Contrast, in Navi Mumbai

MRI of the shoulder is commonly done without contrast. Intravenous gadolinium or MR arthrography (intra‑articular contrast) is used selectively—for suspected labral or subtle rotator‑cuff tears, postoperative assessment, infection, or tumor—to improve visualization. Contrast has small risks (allergy, and nephrogenic systemic fibrosis in severe kidney disease), so use depends on the clinical question and kidney function.

A shoulder MRI with contrast costs vary widely by country, facility and insurance. In the U.S. expect roughly $1,000–$3,000 out‑of‑pocket (insured copays often $200–$800). In private UK clinics prices are about £300–£700. In India typical ranges are ₹5,000–₹20,000. Final price depends on the imaging center, radiologist fees and whether contrast and reporting are included.

Yes — many centers can image both shoulders in one MRI session if clinically indicated. Positioning and coil size affect image quality, so simultaneous bilateral scans may take longer or yield slightly lower-resolution images than separate unilateral exams. Your radiologist or technologist will choose the best approach based on symptoms, diagnostic needs, and scanner capability; discuss options with your referrer or imaging center.

A shoulder MRI with contrast is generally not painful. The scan itself is painless, but the IV insertion can cause a brief pinch. After injection you may feel a warm flushing sensation or metallic taste; mild nausea or headache can occur. Severe allergic reactions are rare. Discomfort from lying still or claustrophobia may occur. Tell staff about kidney problems, pregnancy, or prior contrast reactions.

A non-contrast shoulder MRI typically takes about 20–30 minutes of scanning time, though total appointment time may be 30–60 minutes. Depending on the scanner, required sequences, patient positioning and repeats, scan duration can range from about 15 to 45 minutes. Technologist setup, instructions and waiting add extra time before and after the actual scan.

MRI without contrast uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed anatomy images. MRI with contrast involves injecting a gadolinium-based agent that highlights blood vessels, inflammation, tumors, and areas with blood–brain barrier disruption, improving lesion detection and characterization. Contrast adds an IV injection and slightly longer study; allergic reactions are rare, but gadolinium is avoided or used cautiously in severe kidney impairment.
