An MRI scan of the wrist is a non-invasive imaging test using magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed pictures of bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, cartilage and other soft tissues. It's used to evaluate unexplained wrist pain, swelling, suspected ligament tears, fractures not seen on X-ray, inflammatory or degenerative conditions, and post-injury assessment. No ionizing radiation is used; contrast may be given and metal implants can be a limitation.

MRI provides detailed soft-tissue imaging but has limits: high cost and limited availability; long scan times and loud noise causing discomfort or claustrophobia; contraindicated with certain metal implants or devices and size/weight limits; motion degrades images; less effective for air-filled or bony structures; contrast agents carry risks in kidney disease; not ideal for unstable or uncooperative patients.

Wrist MRI costs vary by country and setting. In the United States expect roughly $400–$3,500 for a single exam (out‑of‑pocket or higher if uninsured; insurance copays/coinsurance typically lower). In the UK NHS scans are free when clinically referred; private scans run about £200–£600. In India private clinic prices commonly range about ₹2,000–₹8,000. Final price depends on facility, contrast use, and insurance.

An MRI is indicated for wrist pain when X-rays and clinical exam are inconclusive, pain persists despite conservative treatment (typically 4–6 weeks), or there’s suspicion of soft-tissue injury (ligaments, TFCC, tendons), occult fracture, infection, inflammatory arthritis, or neurovascular compromise. It’s also used for preoperative planning or when rapid deterioration or worsening neurological signs occur—earlier imaging may be warranted after major trauma.

MRI can often detect wrist nerve problems by showing nerve enlargement, compression, surrounding soft-tissue causes (tenosynovitis, ganglion), muscle denervation changes, and inflammation. Standard MRI may miss early or microscopic dysfunction, so electrodiagnostic testing (NCS/EMG) and clinical evaluation are commonly used alongside MRI. High-resolution MR neurography improves nerve visualization and diagnostic accuracy.

A wrist MRI scan typically takes about 15–30 minutes. Including arrival, registration, safety screening, positioning and changing, expect to be at the imaging center for about 30–60 minutes. If contrast is used, add roughly 10–15 minutes for IV placement and extra sequences. More complex protocols, additional views or scheduling delays can increase the total appointment time.
