MRI Scan Right Shoulder Arthrography

Shoulder arthrography is a diagnostic imaging procedure in which contrast dye is injected into the shoulder joint under local anaesthetic and image guidance (fluoroscopy) to outline joint structures before X‑ray, CT, or MRI. It helps detect rotator cuff or labral tears, adhesive capsulitis, instability and prosthesis issues. The test is brief; risks include pain, bleeding, infection and rare allergic reaction.

An MRI arthrogram of the shoulder can cause brief discomfort—pressure or a sharp sting—when the needle and contrast are inserted. Local anaesthetic is usually given to reduce pain; most people feel only mild aching or stiffness for 24–48 hours. Serious pain or complications are uncommon. You’ll be briefed on risks and given aftercare advice.

MRI arthrography is a specialized imaging technique in which a dilute gadolinium contrast is injected directly into a joint under fluoroscopic or ultrasound guidance, often with local anaesthetic. After injection, MRI scans give high‑resolution views of cartilage, labrum, ligaments and small tears. It improves detection of intra‑articular injuries (shoulder, hip, wrist, ankle). Risks include infection, bleeding and rare allergic reactions.

Recovery after an MRI arthrogram is usually quick. Most people go home the same day, should rest for 24 hours, and avoid strenuous activity or heavy lifting for 24–48 hours. Mild soreness, bruising, or brief swelling/pain is common and typically resolves within a few days; simple painkillers and ice help. Seek medical advice for fever, severe pain, numbness, or prolonged swelling.

You can usually drive after an MRI arthrogram if no sedation was given and you feel steady with no joint numbness or weakness — wait until the local anesthetic has worn off. If you had sedation, strong painkillers, or feel dizzy, do not drive; arrange a lift and avoid driving for at least 24 hours. Always follow the clinic’s instructions and your clinician’s advice.

Arthrography typically takes about 30–60 minutes. The radiology team first cleans the area and injects contrast into the joint under local anaesthetic, which takes 10–20 minutes; imaging follows (X‑ray, CT or MRI) and may add 20–40 minutes. Allow extra time for preparation and recovery, so expect to be at the clinic for roughly an hour to 90 minutes in total.
