Hip MRI contrast is usually a gadolinium‑based agent given IV (commonly 0.1 mmol/kg) to highlight infection, inflammation, tumor, or postoperative changes. For labral/cartilage assessment, MR arthrography uses intra‑articular diluted gadolinium. Contrast is avoided or used cautiously in severe renal impairment (risk of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis) and during pregnancy; discuss allergies and kidney function with your clinician.

Contrast (gadolinium) is not always required for a hip MRI. Non-contrast MRI can effectively assess osteoarthritis, fractures, labral tears, avascular necrosis and many soft‑tissue injuries. Gadolinium is used for specific indications—suspected infection, tumour, active synovitis, post‑operative scar versus recurrent lesion, or when enhancement assessment will change management. Decision depends on clinical question, patient factors and radiologist advice.

A hip MRI with intravenous contrast typically takes about 30 to 60 minutes of scanning; total appointment time often ranges from 45 to 90 minutes to allow for IV insertion, contrast administration and positioning. Duration varies with the imaging protocol, scanner type, patient cooperation and any additional sequences or delayed imaging, so straightforward studies are shorter.

Yes—if you were not sedated and feel normal, you can usually drive home after a hip MRI with gadolinium contrast. Centers often observe patients for about 15–30 minutes for reactions. If you received a sedative, feel drowsy, light‑headed, or had any reaction, do not drive; arrange a lift and follow the facility’s post‑scan instructions. Contact your provider with concerns.

MRI contrast injections are usually not painful — patients often feel a brief sting or pressure when the needle goes in and a short, cold or metallic taste as the contrast flows. Most effects are mild and short-lived (flushing, nausea, minor injection-site soreness). Serious allergic or painful reactions are rare. Tell the radiographer about prior contrast reactions, kidney issues, or concerns before the scan.

Recovery after an MRI arthrogram is usually quick. Most people can resume light activities the same day and normal activities within 24–48 hours; avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for at least 24–48 hours. Expect mild soreness, swelling, or bruising for a few days. If you were sedated, don’t drive for 24 hours. Seek medical advice for fever, increasing pain, spreading redness, or drainage.
