MRI Scan Pilonidal Sinus, in Pimpri Chinchwad

MRI can detect pilonidal sinuses and is useful for mapping sinus tracts, identifying abscesses, secondary extensions and deep tissue involvement. It is not usually required for straightforward cases but is helpful in recurrent, complex, or atypical disease and for preoperative planning. Contrast-enhanced MRI better delineates active inflammation and fistulous pathways, aiding surgical decision-making.

Costs vary by country and facility. On the NHS an MRI is generally provided free; private UK scans typically cost about £200–£1,000. In India expect roughly ₹2,500–₹10,000. In the US prices range widely, roughly $400–$3,500 (higher with contrast or hospital billing). In Australia costs can be AUD 0–900 depending on Medicare/private coverage. Confirm with your provider about contrast, radiologist fees and insurance.

The diagnosis of pilonidal sinus is primarily clinical, based on history and local examination. Imaging is reserved for unclear or recurrent cases: ultrasound is the preferred first-line investigation to delineate sinus tracts and abscesses, while MRI is used for complex, deep, or recurrent disease to map extent before surgery. Routine blood tests are rarely diagnostic.

A pilonidal sinus is usually not life‑threatening but can be painful and prone to infection and recurrent abscesses. Left untreated it may cause chronic discharge, cellulitis, or require repeated surgery. Prompt treatment — drainage, antibiotics, or surgical removal — and good hygiene reduce complications. See a doctor for severe pain, fever, spreading redness, rapidly growing swelling, or recurrent symptoms.

Yes. MRI can detect sinus problems such as mucosal inflammation, fluid, polyps, tumors, and complications extending into soft tissues or the brain. However, CT is preferred for detailed evaluation of sinus bone anatomy and acute sinusitis. MRI is superior for soft-tissue assessment, intracranial or orbital complications, and suspected neoplasm. Your clinician will choose the best scan based on symptoms.

No — a pilonidal sinus is not a tumor. It’s a skin and subcutaneous condition, typically a hair-containing cyst or sinus near the tailbone that can become infected and form abscesses. It often affects young adults with coarse hair or prolonged sitting. Management includes hygiene and hair removal, antibiotics for infection, and minor surgical procedures for chronic or recurrent cases.
