MRI Scan Perineum

A perineum MRI scan is a non-invasive imaging test that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed pictures of the perineum—the area between the genitals and anus. It assesses soft tissues, pelvic floor muscles, fistulas, abscesses, tumors, trauma, and postpartum or continence issues. It may use contrast for better detail, takes about 20–40 minutes, and avoids ionizing radiation.

A perineal scan is an imaging test—usually ultrasound—of the perineum (the area between the genitals and anus). It noninvasively visualises pelvic-floor structures, muscles and the anal sphincter to assess tears or sphincter injuries after childbirth, detect masses or abscesses, and evaluate pelvic-floor defects. Performed with an external probe or other imaging, it aids diagnosis, treatment planning and monitoring of healing.

Perianal MRI is a high-resolution magnetic resonance scan focused on the anus and surrounding soft tissues. It maps fistula tracts, detects abscesses, evaluates sphincter injury and perianal inflammation (often from Crohn’s disease), and guides surgical planning. The non-invasive, radiation-free test uses specialized pelvic coils and specific MRI sequences, sometimes with contrast, to give detailed anatomical and disease activity information.

The perineum is the region between the genitals and anus that supports pelvic organs and forms part of the pelvic floor. It contains muscles, nerves and blood vessels that help maintain urinary and fecal continence, contribute to sexual sensation and function, and stabilize the pelvis. During childbirth it stretches and may be protected or repaired to preserve pelvic support and function.
