MRI Scan Penis

MRI does not use ionizing radiation and has not been shown to harm sperm or reduce fertility. Short-term scanning may slightly raise local temperature, but evidence shows no lasting changes in sperm count, motility, or DNA. If imaging the testes is planned, discuss thermal exposure and gadolinium contrast with your clinician; contrast is used only when necessary.

MRI is not routinely done for erectile dysfunction. Initial evaluation uses history, physical exam and blood tests; Doppler ultrasound and other vascular or neurologic tests are preferred. MRI is reserved for selected cases—suspected pelvic or spinal nerve injury, tumors, complex penile anatomy (e.g., Peyronie’s disease) or refractory cases needing detailed soft‑tissue or neurovascular assessment. Clinical judgment guides use.

People who should avoid MRI include those with non‑MRI‑compatible implanted metal devices (some pacemakers, defibrillators, cochlear implants, older aneurysm clips), metallic fragments in the eye or body, or certain neurostimulators. Pregnant people are usually advised to avoid MRI in the first trimester unless essential. Avoid gadolinium contrast if you have severe kidney disease or a prior contrast allergy; severe claustrophobia or inability to lie still may also preclude scanning.

No — diagnostic MRI does not affect testosterone levels. Conventional MRI uses non‑ionizing magnetic fields and radiofrequency pulses, and clinical evidence shows no lasting impact on male hormones or fertility. Extremely high‑field or experimental exposures could theoretically cause transient tissue heating, but routine diagnostic MRI (with or without gadolinium) has not been shown to lower testosterone. Discuss concerns with your doctor.

Penile color Doppler ultrasound with intracavernosal vasoactive injection is the preferred imaging test for erectile dysfunction, as it evaluates arterial inflow and venous leak in real time. MRI or pelvic MR/CT angiography may be used when structural or proximal arterial disease is suspected; invasive cavernosography/cavernosometry is reserved for complex cases or pre-surgical planning.

Urologists evaluate erectile dysfunction with a thorough medical and sexual history, validated questionnaires (e.g., IIEF), and physical exam. They order blood tests (glucose, lipids, testosterone) and urinalysis to assess metabolic and hormonal causes. Specialized tests include nocturnal penile tumescence monitoring, penile Doppler ultrasound for arterial/venous flow, neurological assessment, and sometimes intracavernosal injection tests to assess vascular responsiveness.
