MRI Scan Orbit

An MRI orbit scan is a non‑invasive imaging test that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the eye sockets, optic nerves, extraocular muscles, eyelids and surrounding soft tissues. It evaluates vision loss, optic neuritis, tumors, inflammation, infections, fractures and vascular lesions. No ionising radiation is used; gadolinium contrast may be given for better lesion detection. Metal must be removed before scanning.

The orbit is the bony socket in the skull that houses and protects the eye and its associated structures—eyeball, extraocular muscles, nerves (including the optic nerve), blood vessels, lacrimal apparatus and orbital fat. It’s formed by parts of several skull bones and contains openings like the optic canal and orbital fissures, allowing passage of nerves and vessels between the eye and the brain.

An orbit scan is a CT or MRI examination that images the eye socket (orbit) and its contents — eyeball, extraocular muscles, optic nerve, fat and bony walls. It detects fractures, inflammation or infection, tumors, optic nerve disease and thyroid eye disease. CT shows bone and acute trauma; MRI gives superior soft‑tissue and nerve detail. Contrast dye may be used; the scan is noninvasive and guides care.

A dedicated MRI of the orbits typically takes about 15–30 minutes for the core sequences. If contrast (gadolinium) is required, expect an additional 10–20 minutes for IV setup and extra imaging, bringing the total to roughly 25–50 minutes. Allow a few more minutes for registration, positioning and safety checks, so plan to be at the radiology department for about half an hour to an hour.

An orbital tumor is an abnormal growth in the eye socket (orbit) that can originate from nearby tissues—fat, muscles, nerves, lacrimal gland, or blood vessels—or spread from other body sites. Common signs include a bulging eye (proptosis), vision changes, pain, double vision, or limited eye movement. Diagnosis uses imaging (CT/MRI) and often biopsy; treatment varies by tumor type and may include surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy.

A brain MRI can reveal many causes of visual symptoms that originate in the brain or optic pathways — for example stroke, tumors, demyelination (optic neuritis/MS), and pituitary or compressive lesions. However, it often won’t show primary eye conditions (retinal disease, glaucoma) and may miss subtle optic nerve or orbital pathology unless dedicated orbital/contrast sequences are ordered. Eye exams and OCT remain essential for primary eye disorders.
