MRI SCAN LUMBOSACRAL SPINE CONTRAST, in Navi Mumbai

Most lumbosacral MRIs are performed without contrast; routine sequences evaluate discs, nerve roots and the spinal canal. Gadolinium is used selectively—when infection, tumor, inflammation, postoperative scar versus recurrent disease, or unclear non‑contrast findings are suspected. Discuss potential risks (for example, concerns with severe kidney disease) and expected benefits with your clinician before using contrast.

MRI spine contrast usually uses intravenous gadolinium‑based agents (commonly 0.1 mmol/kg) to better show tumors, infection, inflammation, vascular lesions and distinguish scar from recurrent disease. Renal function (eGFR) should be checked because severe renal impairment increases risk of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis. Macrocyclic gadolinium agents are preferred for safety; use in pregnancy is avoided unless essential.

Costs vary by country and facility. In India a contrast lumbar MRI typically runs about ₹6,000–₹20,000. In the UK private scans usually cost roughly £300–£1,000 (publicly funded scans are free when clinically indicated). In the US out‑of‑pocket prices commonly range from $700 to $5,000 or more. Final cost depends on location, facility, contrast type, and insurance coverage.

A lumbar spine MRI with contrast typically takes about 30–60 minutes from start to finish. The scan itself usually lasts 20–40 minutes, plus time for IV placement, contrast injection, and brief monitoring. Total appointment time can be longer if extra sequences are required or there are delays, so plan for up to an hour or slightly more.

You have the right to refuse MRI contrast. Tell the radiologist or referring physician so they can explain benefits, risks and how omitting contrast may reduce diagnostic accuracy. If you’re concerned about allergy or kidney issues, providers can check kidney function, offer premedication, or use non‑contrast techniques. Refusal should be documented after an informed discussion of potential impact on diagnosis and treatment.

Lumbar MRI images the lumbar spine (typically L1–L5), evaluating vertebrae, discs, spinal canal and nerve roots. Lumbosacral MRI includes the lumbar region plus the lumbosacral junction and sacrum (S1 and sacral nerve roots), often covering sacroiliac joints. Lumbosacral studies are chosen when symptoms involve the lowest disc level, sacrum, pelvic/sciatic distribution or sacroiliac pain.
