MRI of the thigh provides detailed images of bones, muscle groups, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, blood vessels, nerves and bone marrow. It detects muscle tears, strains, hematomas, inflammation, infections, abscesses, bursitis, cysts, tumors, bone marrow edema and stress fractures. MRI also evaluates vascular or postsurgical changes, guides treatment planning and helps monitor healing without ionizing radiation.

An MRI of the thigh typically requires about 20–45 minutes of actual scanning. Including check‑in, positioning, planning images and any contrast injection, expect a total appointment time of roughly 30–60 minutes. More complex protocols or additional sequences can extend this to around 60–90 minutes. Times vary by facility and the exam’s purpose; your imaging centre will give the most accurate estimate.

A leg MRI is generally not painful. You lie still while the machine makes loud knocking noises; discomfort usually comes from staying in one position, tight coils against the limb, or anxiety/claustrophobia. If contrast dye is used, IV insertion may sting briefly. Technologists can provide ear protection, padding, and reassurance; mild sedation is available if anxiety or discomfort is significant.

MRI can detect structural causes of leg nerve problems — for example spinal disc herniation, foraminal stenosis, tumors or nerve swelling — and specialized MR neurography visualizes peripheral nerve injury, entrapment, or inflammation. However, MRI often cannot detect microscopic or metabolic neuropathies (like diabetic neuropathy); electrodiagnostic tests (EMG/NCS) and clinical assessment are usually needed for detail.

MRI can detect many bone problems, especially bone marrow changes, occult or stress fractures, infections (osteomyelitis), bone tumours and avascular necrosis, plus related soft‑tissue or joint injuries. It’s very sensitive to marrow edema but less detailed for cortical bone or fine fracture lines, where X‑ray or CT may be better. MRI uses no ionizing radiation but has specific contraindications (e.g., certain metal implants).
