It helps assess cartilage health, track degeneration in osteoarthritis or after injury, guide treatment planning, and monitor response to interventions noninvasively.

MRI is the best noninvasive test for assessing knee cartilage. It visualizes cartilage thickness, tears, focal defects and degeneration, and can detect associated bone marrow and soft‑tissue changes. Standard MRI detects most full‑thickness cartilage lesions; high‑resolution sequences (3T or cartilage‑protocol MRI) improve detection of partial‑thickness or small defects. Correlation with symptoms and, if needed, arthroscopy may still be required.
