MRI Scan Left Forearm

MRI of the forearm provides high-resolution, cross-sectional images of bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves and blood vessels. It detects fractures, bone marrow edema, tendon tears, muscle strains, ligament injuries, nerve compression, infections, tumors and inflammatory or vascular abnormalities. MRI is especially useful for evaluating soft-tissue injuries, unexplained pain, masses or preoperative planning because it visualizes structures not seen well on X-ray.

A forearm MRI scan typically requires about 20 to 45 minutes of actual scanning. Total appointment time, including check-in, positioning and paperwork, is usually 30 to 60 minutes. If intravenous contrast is needed, plan an additional 10 to 15 minutes for injection and extra imaging. Exact duration varies with scanner type, the number of sequences ordered and patient needs.

To MRI a forearm, the patient removes metal and jewelry, lies supine or prone with the arm extended, and the technologist positions a dedicated surface coil over the forearm. Immobilize with cushions or straps. Typical sequences are T1, T2/STIR or fat‑suppressed PD; contrast (gadolinium) is used if needed. Scan takes 20–40 minutes; inform staff about implants or pregnancy.

Yes — many shoulder MRIs can be done in an open MRI, which benefits claustrophobic or larger patients. However, most open scanners are lower-field and may yield lower-resolution images, potentially missing subtle rotator cuff or labral tears. Higher-field open systems exist and improve detail. Discuss your diagnostic needs with the referring physician or radiologist to choose the best scanner.

An MRI can often detect certain arm nerve problems—such as structural nerve injury, compression (e.g., by a disk or mass), nerve swelling, and muscle changes from denervation. High-resolution MRI neurography increases sensitivity. However, MRI may miss subtle or purely functional nerve damage; nerve conduction studies/EMG and clinical evaluation are often needed to assess nerve function and small-fiber neuropathy.

The forearm is innervated primarily by the median, ulnar and radial nerves. Key branches include the anterior interosseous (motor, from median), posterior interosseous and superficial/deep radial branches, palmar and dorsal cutaneous branches, plus the lateral and medial antebrachial cutaneous nerves. These provide motor control to wrist and finger muscles and sensory innervation to the volar and dorsal forearm and hand.
