MRI of the forearm provides high-resolution, cross-sectional images of bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves and blood vessels. It detects fractures, bone marrow edema, tendon tears, muscle strains, ligament injuries, nerve compression, infections, tumors and inflammatory or vascular abnormalities. MRI is especially useful for evaluating soft-tissue injuries, unexplained pain, masses or preoperative planning because it visualizes structures not seen well on X-ray.

However, MRI may miss subtle or purely functional nerve damage; nerve conduction studies/EMG and clinical evaluation are often needed to assess nerve function and small-fiber neuropathy.
