A knee MRI scans only the knee(s) specified by the referrer. You can have a unilateral MRI for one knee or a bilateral MRI that images both; bilateral exams take longer and may cost more. A non-contrast scan usually lasts around 30–45 minutes; if contrast is used or extra sequences are needed, total time including injection, setup, and positioning can reach about 60 minutes.
