MRI Scan Knee Arthrography

MRI arthrography is a specialized MRI done after injecting contrast dye directly into a joint. The intra‑articular contrast outlines cartilage, labrum, ligaments and joint surfaces, improving detection of tears, cartilage defects and instability that standard MRI may miss. The injection is guided by fluoroscopy or ultrasound with local anaesthetic; it’s outpatient, with small risks like infection, bleeding or allergic reaction.

An MRI arthrogram is usually uncomfortable rather than intensely painful. Local anesthetic numbs the skin and joint, but you may feel brief stinging when the needle is placed and pressure or aching as contrast is injected. Mild soreness, swelling or bruising can last 24–48 hours. Over-the-counter pain relievers, ice, and rest help. Seek care for severe pain, fever, redness, or sudden swelling.

Yes—usually you can walk immediately after an MRI arthrogram. You may have local soreness, mild swelling, or transient numbness from local anesthetic; avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting for 24–48 hours. If you were sedated, don’t drive for 24 hours. Use ice and simple pain relief as needed and contact your provider for fever, severe pain, increasing swelling, or drainage.

Contrast for a routine knee MRI is given intravenously, usually into a vein in the arm. For an MR arthrogram, contrast is injected directly into the knee joint—commonly into the suprapatellar pouch or a lateral/medial recess—under image guidance (fluoroscopy or ultrasound) after local anaesthetic, using a small-gauge needle for accurate intra-articular placement.

An MRI arthrogram typically costs approximately US $700–$3,000 privately, UK £250–£800 privately (NHS scans are free for eligible patients), and about ₹3,000–₹15,000 privately in India.
