MRI Scan Head

A head MRI can detect brain tumors, cysts, strokes (ischemic and hemorrhagic), aneurysms and vascular malformations, inflammation or infection (encephalitis, abscess), demyelinating diseases like multiple sclerosis, hydrocephalus, traumatic injuries (contusions), pituitary and cranial nerve abnormalities, congenital malformations, and many degenerative disorders. Specialized sequences (MRA, fMRI) assess blood vessels and functional or metabolic changes.

Brain MRI has no ionizing radiation and is generally safe. Possible side effects: claustrophobia, anxiety, loud noises, mild headache, dizziness, nausea, or discomfort from lying still. If gadolinium contrast is used: injection-site pain, temporary metallic taste, allergic reactions (rare), and very rare kidney-related complications in people with severe renal impairment. Heating or burns can occur with metal implants.

Before a head MRI, remove jewelry, hairpins, watches, hearing aids and metal-containing makeup; wear comfortable, metal-free clothing. Inform staff about implants, pacemakers, pregnancy, kidney problems or allergies, and bring prior scans. You may need blood tests or an IV if contrast is planned. Arrive early, expect earplugs, stay still during scanning, and discuss claustrophobia or sedation if needed.

An MRI head scan is generally safe: it uses magnets and radio waves, not ionizing radiation. Most people tolerate it well, though loud noise and claustrophobia can occur. Screening is important for metal implants, some pacemakers, and pregnancy. Intravenous gadolinium contrast is usually safe but avoided in severe kidney disease and used only when necessary. Discuss concerns with your clinician.

MRI can detect many forms of brain damage — including stroke-related infarcts, hemorrhage, tumors, traumatic contusions, demyelination and atrophy — by showing structural and tissue changes. However, very small, early, microscopic, or purely functional injuries may not be visible on standard MRI; advanced sequences (diffusion-weighted, susceptibility, functional MRI) improve detection. Clinical assessment and other tests are often needed.

Brain MRI costs vary widely by country, facility, and whether contrast is used. Typical ranges: United States $400–$3,500+ per scan (contrast usually higher); private UK £200–£800; India INR 3,000–15,000. Insurance or public health coverage can substantially reduce or eliminate out‑of‑pocket costs. Check local imaging centers and your insurer for exact prices and prior authorisation requirements.
