MRI Scan Face

A face MRI provides high-resolution images of soft tissues—muscles, fat, salivary glands, sinuses, orbital contents and facial nerves—and can detect tumors, inflammation, infections, cysts, vascular abnormalities and congenital or post‑traumatic changes. It evaluates the temporomandibular joint, orbital structures and paranasal sinuses, helps stage malignancies and guides surgical planning or biopsy when CT or X‑ray are insufficient.

To get an MRI of the face, consult your doctor or specialist for a referral and book at an accredited imaging center. Inform staff about implants, pregnancy, or allergies. No fasting is usually required; remove metal jewelry. Some studies use IV contrast. The scan typically takes 20–45 minutes. A radiologist reviews images and sends a report to your referring clinician for follow-up.

MRI head scans are generally safe for most people because they use magnetic fields and radio waves, not ionizing radiation. Risks include problems with certain metal implants (pacemakers, clips), rare reactions to gadolinium contrast, and anxiety or claustrophobia. Hearing protection is provided for loud noise. Pregnant patients and anyone with implants or kidney issues should discuss risks and alternatives with their doctor.

An MRI of the face typically takes about 20 to 45 minutes of scanning. Simple exams may be 15 to 30 minutes; more detailed studies or those requiring contrast can extend to 45 to 60 minutes. Total appointment time including preparation and paperwork may be up to 60 to 90 minutes. Exact duration depends on the clinical indication and sequences used.

MRI can show many causes of facial nerve damage by visualizing the nerve pathway and surrounding structures. With contrast it can reveal nerve inflammation, compression, tumors, demyelinating lesions or stroke affecting facial pathways. However, MRI may miss microscopic or purely functional nerve injuries; electrodiagnostic tests (EMG/nerve conduction) and clinical assessment are often needed to confirm extent and prognosis.

MRI can detect infections that extend beneath the skin: it demonstrates edema, cellulitis, abscesses, fascial involvement and bone infection, and helps distinguish fluid collections from simple inflammation. It’s not usually needed for superficial skin infections; clinical exam and ultrasound are preferred. MRI is reserved for deep, complicated, treatment‑resistant, or suspected bone‑involving infections and often uses contrast for best detail.
